The Business Side of Restoration: A New Profitability Model for the Modern Restorer, Monica Aquino and Howie Wolf of HW3 Group LLC. At The EXPERIENCE Event in the Spring, Wolf and Aquino discussed that over the past 15 years, technology, changes in claims processes and changes to the roles of parties in the restoration process have restorers working harder than ever for less money. Between price-fixing and restrictions in scope allowances to properly do the work allowed under insurance programs, restorers are left to reverse engineer profit and compromise in other areas of their business to stay alive. Part of the problem is the modern restorer is trying to fit new technology and processes into an outdated business model. The role of the estimator and technician has changed tremendously, but is it for the better? How do you make more money without a drastic increase in revenue or a reduction in expenses? We ended Part 1 of this sequel event with Wolf and Aquino discussing the issues that our industry is faced with, the dire need for change, and the introduction of a new business model for profitable restoration in the future.   
 
And, now, Part 2. Wolf and Aquino will go into more depth of the model and discuss the roles of key employees. As carriers continue to minimize the role of the adjuster, increase the beauracracy created by third party administrators, and establish program parameters that reward less qualified restorers, a new model is essential to defend the integrity of the craft of restoration. This can’t-miss event is the second installment of a series to be held at The Experience. In Part 2, you can take away a new business model, some basic job descriptions and a basic conversion plan for your company. Managing Ambient and Surface Temperatures in a Flooded Environment Directly Impact Drying Times, Dr. Dan Bernazzani - Sr. Vice President, Environmental Division, YOUNG & Associates and Ed Jones - Code Blue VP of Education, Research & Development, recently published findings on this phenomenon. EXPERIENCE how this was done in the classroom and then see first-hand how this is done in our flood house during the convention.

The study was limited in scope, appears to show it is possible to dry gypsum board, base trim, sill plate and insulation in place on an exterior wall without removing those materials. The method will be shown at the conference. They will show how using airflow, lowering the humidity of the ambient air, and providing energy in the form of heat on the wet surface materials can accelerate drying time.  Directed heat flow will be employed to dry gypsum board exterior walls with fiberglass insulation and no vapor barrier without removing base trim or drilling holes without any detrimental effect. John Banta, Certified Industrial Hygienist and Author.  The measures necessary to return mold contaminated homes to a normal fungal ecology is well researched and documented.  What isn’t so clear is if soft or porous personal possessions such as a mattress or upholstered furniture can be returned to a condition where mold sensitive persons won’t have to discard the items.  John is using crowd funding to support science based research to help answer these questions.  He will be presenting preliminary findings from his research and discussing questions that remain unanswered. 3 Part – Costa Group Education, Barry Costa Workshop on Tufted Carpet Repairs St. Thomas B

SESSION #1: Hands-On Session encouraging full participation by the participants:  We will demonstrate surface grafting of a low level loop carpet, installed via direct gluedown.  Once demonstrating how easy this repair is, the participants will be asked to do the repair.  I will coach the participants in their work as an industry expert in this field.  We will also do a permanent section of a low level loop, direct glue down.  These are two of the six tufted carpet repairs used in the ICRA Tufted Carpet Repair Performance Assessment for certification. 

SESSION #2: Hands-On Session encouraging full participation by the participants: We will demonstrate surface grafting of a patterned berber carpet installed via stretch-in method.  Once demonstrating what must be done for a successful repair, the participants will be asked to do the repair with constant coaching by Barry Costa.  During this session we will also perform a surface grafting of a cut pile Saxony installed stretch-in method and minor delamination repair.  These are 3 of the 6 tufted carpet repairs used in the ICRA Tufted Carpet Repair Performance Assessment for Certification.

3 Part – ICRA Hands-on Carpet Cleaning Workshops: ICRA offers Carpet Cleaning Performance Assessment Certification Preparatory Practice - Moderated by ICRA Instructors  St. Thomas A

Take advantage of the ICRA Carpet Cleaning Performance Assessment for Certification on Saturday Sept. 10th.  During the assessment, each candidate will be assessed on 160 hands-on criteria by approved and trained ICRA Carpet Cleaning Assessors.  ICRA, in conjunction with The Experience, has developed a series of sessions during the Conference that will teach, demonstrate and allow for practicing the many tasks that assessors will be looking for.

SESSION #1: ICRA  Hands-on Carpet Cleaning Workshop: A group of talented instructors will address the tasks associated with identification of carpet fibers, chemical compatibility with fibers, chemical dilution and use, carpet construction identification, measurements of area with a variety of tools including measuring from a blueprint and chemical mixing measurements.

SESSION #2: ICRA Hands-on Carpet Cleaning Workshop: A group of talented instructors will address the tasks associated with proper vacuuming procedures and techniques, hot water extraction cleaning, dry powder compound cleaning, encapsulation cleaning and bonnet cleaning.

SESSION #3: ICRA Hands-on Carpet Cleaning Workshop: A group of talented instructors will address the tasks associated with urine contamination, including topical treatment procedures as well as full removal of carpet, cushion and tackstrip, treatment of the subfloor, replacement of the tackstrip and carpet cushion and re-engagement of the carpet.  Also during this session spot and stain identification and removal techniques will be covered.
